Markham, Ontario
A process that relies on public engagement to give all stakeholders a voice in creating a vision and strategic plan for future growth opportunities.

Torti Gallas + Partners Inc. and Michael Morrissey, working with the Unionville Business Improvement Area (BIA) and an alliance of independent experts, has been engaged by the City of Markham to develop a strategic vision for Main Street Unionville. Unionville is a historic town precinct located within Markham, a suburban city within the greater Toronto metropolitan region. Unionville Main Street possesses a unique historic character and has evolved over the years as an important shopping and entertainment attraction within the Greater Toronto area. However, Unionville has faced increasing challenges to its continued success, as the businesses which form the core of the village strain against limited area for growth and expansion, changing market conditions, limited parking, and the requirements of historic preservation. The Main Street Unionville Precinct Master Plan Process relies on extensive public engagement to give all stakeholders a voice and create a shared vision and strategic plan for future growth opportunities within the village. The Plan addresses problems such as shuttered storefronts, an imbalanced retail mix, limited circulation and parking, and constrained infill opportunities. The Plan resolves each of these problems in a comprehensive solution, all the while preserving the all important historic character that makes Main Street Unionville such a unique destination.
