Historical Timeline

Firm is founded by Jack C. Cohen, AIA

Throughout the 1950's and 1960's, it became the most prolific architecture firm in suburban Maryland during the mid-20th century.

Jack Smith Kerxton, AIA joins firm in 1959

Firm moves into Cohen and Haft designed office building in  Silver Spring, Maryland

Firm wins first national AIA Award for Sibley Plaza affordable housing

John F. Torti, FAIA joins the firm.

Thomas M. Gallas, CPA joins the firm in 1985 as Chief Financial Officer

Together, Tom Gallas and John Torti begin to reimagine the firm

Establishment of the Jack Smith Kerxton Memorial Scholarship at the University of Maryland

Firm begins its significant journey in Affordable Housing with the first HOPE VI project, Lafayette Courts. Hope VI projects follow as well as 7 Choice Neighborhoods.

Firm receives 2 inaugural Charter Awards from the Congress for the New Urbanism

Office in Los Angeles, California opens

Firm name becomes Torti Gallas + Partners

Torti Gallas establishes a firm design charter

First book is published “Architects of Community”

Tampa, Florida office opens

Firm’s headquarters moves to the historic Grimke School in Washington, DC

Murphy Antoine becomes firm President

Fourth generation of firm leaders on the Board of Directors: Murphy Antoine, Sarah Alexander, Micheal Rollison & Scott Welch
