Westlawn Gardens Wins 2018 APA Award!!

So proud that our Westlawn Gardens project will receive the American Planning Association's 2018 HUD Secretary's Opportunity & Empowerment Award at the APA's National Planning Conference on April 23rd!!

Built more than 50 years ago, the original Westlawn neighborhood consisted of over 700 barracks-style public housing units on 75 acres that inadequately addressed the needs of its residents. Superblocks isolated it from its surroundings, physically and socially. Severely undersized housing did not properly serve growing families and individuals.

Through a holistic, community-based design process, Westlawn, Wisconsin’s largest public housing neighborhood, is successfully being transformed from an aged and stressed community into a lively, mixed-use, mixed-income neighborhood. The project’s innovation lies in its inextricable approach to financial, environmental and social sustainability.

The completed first phase is now arguably one of the most sustainable affordable housing communities in the country. The project earned the highest level of certification for LEED for Neighborhood Development under the standards applicable at the time. 156 single family and townhomes were designed to the standards of LEED for Homes Platinum, with one Home serving as a LEED Platinum Certified case study.
