His name might grace the logo of an architecture firm, but Tom Gallas professes not to be a creative.

The CPA landed in the design sphere after he was hired out of PricewaterhouseCoopers to join an architecture shop in Silver Spring in 1985. Known as CHK Architects and Planners at the time, the firm’s last generation of leaders brought him aboard to help beef up the firm’s business and financial expertise.

It’s safe to say that calculation worked out: Gallas was tapped alongside John Torti to lead the firm into its next era in 1993. And while he never made the jump to design work, Gallas serves as CEO for D.C.-based Torti Gallas + Partners and its 132 employees, which generated $34 million in 2023 revenue from projects around the world.
