The Multifamily Architecture Code for Al Wasl, a new development envisioned by Calthorpe Associates, is a set of design guidelines for buildings within a block. It is the intent of this code to include a range of design ideologies from contemporary, urban, principle-based design to a traditional architecture inspired by regional history, culture, landscape, and climate. These guidelines form the basis for a consistent approach that will allow the client to realize the vision and goals of this project.
The Architecture Code is to be used in conjunction with Al Wasl’s Urban and Sustainability Codes, and its Administration and Procedures Code. The requirements within the Architectural Code build upon the concepts and strategies of the other codes at the block, individual building, and architectural detail scales. The Multifamily Architecture Code is intended to be flexible. Traditional urban evolution happens over many decades with many differing influences and competing factors, resulting in an aesthetically rich and stylistically varied built environment. Flexibility is key to fostering a process akin to the goals of a traditional city. Ultimately, where a conflict may arise amongst the codes, resolution shall be the sole decision of the client.
Located in a hot and arid climate, the architecture of Al Wasl shall create a contemporary spirit of place that is sustainable and adaptive to its climatic, cultural and social context. The architecture shall have a clear distinction between public and private zones, as well as service and family-oriented spaces. It shall include a balance of an architecture derived from regional traditions and an architecture that is contemporary, using design principles that reinforce the urban design of Al Wasl.
